It's Fair Time: Vet Tips for a Successful Show

Fair time is here! This is a busy time of year as area youth prepare animals for fairs and shows. Here are a few tips to help make your show a success:

  • Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (health papers) are only good for 30 days. If you have multiple fairs, try to time the vet visit to cover all shows within a 30-day period.

  • Prior to inspection, make sure that your animal is free of infectious diseases, including warts, ringworm, pinkeye, abscesses and foot rot. If you suspect any of these issues, they should be addressed early enough to resolve prior to show time.

  • If your animals do not have proper identification, you must have adequate restraint to place an official ID tag.

  • Check the vaccination requirements for your show. The State Fair of Virginia requires that all cattle be vaccinated for respiratory disease complex at least 15 days prior to the show.

  • Biosecurity is everyone’s job. Keep equipment, trailers, boots, etc. clean to avoid bringing disease to or from the fair.
